GAS Meetings - Where and When

Postby gas » Fri, 02-Oct-2009 17:40

Meetings of the society take place at Lecture Theatre L in the Lecture Theatre Block (Level 2) of the University of Surrey
on the first Thursday of every month (except August) at 7:30 for a 7:45 start and finishing at 10pm
.

The Guildford Astronomical Society meets at a fantastic venue in Lecture Theatre L in the Lecture Theatre Block (Level 2) of the University of Surrey, Guildford.

A detailed map (available at http://www.guildfordas.org/public/downloads/STAG%20HILL%20SITE%20PLAN%20A3.pdf) showing the location of the Lecture Theatre Block (pale blue and near the middle of the map), Main Car Parks 1-4 and Bus Stops next to Senate House and North of the Austin Pearce Building. There are also more convenient car park spaces available for disabled drivers at various nearby locations. For a preview of the lecture room see http://portal.surrey.ac.uk/portal/page?_pageid=750,102122&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL.

We warmly welcome visitors. The admission charge is £5 for adults, £4 for juniors and students. You are kindly requested to sign in, whether you are a member or a guest, on the sheet on the table at the back of the room. Thank you!

We invite a speaker for each meeting, many of whom are well known names in astronomy. Our guest speaker will present his or her specialised subject for about an hour, which includes time for questions from the audience. Our speakers are chosen to represent a wide range of subjects within astronomy, and provide talks that are suitable for everyone from complete beginners to the more experienced amateurs. Our list of talks for this year can be seen at http://www.guildfordas.org/public/meetings.html#talks.

We then take a 15-20 minute break for tea, coffee and biscuits, and a chance to have a chat. The second part of the meeting features Society news and business, reports from group within the society including Observing, Outreach, Special Projects etc, "What's Up?" describing what to look for in the night sky in the coming month, and upcoming meetings at other local societies.

The meetings finish at about 10pm, and afterwards we'll be meeting at the 'Wates House' bar just a very short walk away. Everyone is very welcome to come along.

See you at our next meeting !
